I found this website very useful for biographical data and poetry reference. I browsed the site and found interesting information on Dickenson, Kipling, Poe, and even Dr. Seuss. Being able to read about these different poets was great. I like to read about the different lives of the poets. Reading where they came from and what they went through in their personal lives you can begin to see the meaning behind some of their works. I read some of the works that were available on the website. I spent some time reading The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe. In high school I remember reading Tale Tell Heart. The gruesome nature is what drew me to read more about him. I am finding a better appreciation for poetry as this class progresses.

I found this website to be very odd. I browsed through the link called Hyperbody. There were e-poems there that were really interesting in an odd sort of way. The pictures were of human body parts with graphical designs over them. You really had to look to see the body parts. The poetry that accompanied each picture was good. Each one seemed to tell a bit of a story. They conveyed a sense of provocativeness. I was not necessarily intrigued by the poetry here, but more by the unique graphics that the author used. This site was useful for me because it allowed me to see other types and expressions of poetry.

This site was nice. I chose the link for e-poetry. I do not have a clear understanding of what e-poetry actually is. I think of poetry as lines on paper and to see these pictures and images with few words being called poetry is a difficult concept for me to grasp. I browsed some of the e-poems. I found some that were in French, those were funny. I could not understand what was being said, but the images and sounds conveyed humor. Sites like this are helpful in teaching me that there is more to poetry than paper, pen, and words.

Three sites visited: Interview with Nikki Giovanni, Patrick Martin's Poetry Resource, and Peter Howard: Hypertext poetry

I read the interview with Nikki Giovanni and I was dually impressed. She is a highly decorated poet. She has earned many prestigious awards. She seems very down to earth. Her poetry comes from the heart. She writes from her life experiences. Growing up as an African American woman in the South has shaped her character and taught her much. From the interview, I gather that she is a very lovely, strong woman. I was very taken with her serene, calming attitude. I enjoyed this site because I was able to get to know the author. I think it helps to get up close and personal with them to better understand why they write what they write.

Patrick Martin's Poetry Resource was amazing!! I have just finished a May-mini class over humor in literature. I read The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. I thought this book was a hoot. It pleased me to find his name among so many listed on the website. I was able to read and learn more about his life and writings. I also viewed a site on Emily Dickenson. I had heard somewhere that she was a very morbid, dark writer. I was interested to find out more about her and her poetry to see what it was all about. I think sites like this help when we can see what happened during the writers life to mold them into who they are. Some writers put pen to paper and produce abstract, out-there works; however, some write from the heart and life experience. It helps when we can see what has happened to them to understand where they are coming from.

Peter Howard: hypertext poetry was the third site I viewed. I really enjoyed the short poetry on this site. I felt that it was good for me to see this form of poetry. It was very colorful, playful, abstract. It was really different from what I think poetry is. There were colorful boxes with dancing words on the screen. Each box was a different poem. I thought they were a lot of fun and a great example for me to learn from. Around every bend I am seeing that the preconceived notions I had of poetry are wrong or misguided.

I listened to the interview and some poetry readings by Denise Duhamel. I enjoyed listening to the interview. I mostly enjoyed reading to the poetry. I found it very easy to imagine the poem and images in my mind with it being read aloud. I was very impressed with the poem Feminism. I felt that it was so strong. I liked that she was able to tell, through the interview, how she came about writing the poem. She stated that she used a Girl Scout handbook that belonged to her niece to use as reference material for writing this poem. I thought that was so interesting. I was glad to hear what materials she used for inspiration. I am slowly finding that poetry has rules, but the source of the poetry is wide open.

They even talked about how her poems contained a lot of humorous content. I don't necessarily think of poetry geared towards adults to be humorous in nature. I have this thought of broken hearted woman pouring her heart out over the paper through poetry. I now see that poetry geared towards adults can be humorous. Adult poetry does not have to be serious, it can be fun and playful.

I thought this site was helpful because it had the audio clips. You were able to hear the author and listen to her thoughts about her poetry. Reading an interview is never the same as getting to hear it live. I appreciated hearing her laugh and giggle about her poems and their content. I appreciate light hearted humor. I must admit that her poem entitled Nick at Night was hard for me to understand completely. I have come to the conclusion through the last two web sites that I may be trying to hard to understand. I think I need to clear my head, relax, and just listen and stop trying to assign value to each line like a number. They do not have to make sense.
The Electronic Literature Directory is an amazing reference site for not only writer's of poetry but lover's of poetry. I read through many of the poems that this site had to offer and enjoyed some of the very much. One I enjoyed was entitled The Afterglow. I was pleased by the gentle words and images that this poem invoked. It was very calming. Some of the poems I did not understand. I read and re-read them and still was unable to decipher their meaning or even gather images of the words clearly.
I enjoyed this site because it was an easy resource for viewing a variety of poems easily. Even though I do not understand poetry very well, I am slowly learning to appreciate it. I believe that, for me, learning to appreciate poetry is the first step to understanding it. I find that if I cannot develop an appreciation for something that it is difficult for me to form an understanding of it. My goal for this semester is to use these websites and the ones that we later must find to form a better appreciation and understanding of poetry.
I believe this site will be helpful to me in the writing process because of the many different poems I have access to view. The more I can read and expose myself to, the better of a writer I can become. I had a preconceived notion of poetry that it should rhyme and be somewhat short in length. I think I had this notion due to my love of children's poetry which most always is short and rhymes. I am slowly learning that poetry does not always rhyme and it can be substantial in length. There are some really great poems in this site. It will be helpful in opening my eyes and widening my understanding of poetry.

The Toolkits for poet’s website was very helpful to me since I know very little about poetry. Through this website I was able to find a link called Poetry form and Terminology. I spent the majority of the time browsing this site familiarizing myself with the terms associated with poetry. I was shocked to see the large number of terms associated with poetry. Through this link I also browsed the other websites containing information over Asian-inspired forms of poetry. I was not intrigued by the Asian-forms of poetry. I found them to be very confusing. I believe that this site will be very helpful to me in writing poems. It contains the basic fundamentals that I need in order to be successful as a beginning poetry reader and composer.

I also spent some time browsing through the link for Japanese poetry patterns. I was most interested in the information on haikus. I read information and thought about the poetry style. For a poem that is short, I thought it would be easy to write; however, as I read more about them I realized that they are very well thought out and difficult. The part I thought was most interesting is that in a haiku the first line should convey a feeling through images drawn from our natural world. Wow!! I think that when you read something and it invokes emotions or images in your mind that are strong that it is amazing. When you hear people say that the written word is powerful, this is what I think of. Not only does it educate us, but it invokes such great emotions.

I believe that this site will help me in writing because it provides the fundamentals for poetry and a wide variety of links for examples of written works. There is such a diverse selection of authors and forms that I will be able to expose myself to many things. I need to understand the basics of poetry and to view works from different periods of time and people. I believe that is why this site is going to be so very helpful.
